Sumera Garcia-Quadri

"My decision to enter the field of dance and wellness came out of my personal struggles with weight and body issues which can be traced back to my childhood. I was raised in a single-parent household by my late father who had Diabetes and a physical disability. Organized physical activities outside of the home weren’t always encouraged. Funds were also limited. In my teens, I decided to get serious about exercising but gyms and traditional exercise equipment worked for short periods of time and then I’d get bored and give up. I wasn’t sure how I was going to stay healthy if I could not find a long-term physical activity solution. I felt hopeless. I lacked the confidence to join and express myself physically in a group class. It wasn’t until working for health and sports-focused charities, however, that I realized the health benefits associated with regular weekly exercise. I decided to get serious and created a wellness plan that worked for me. Putting what I had learned into practice, I embarked on a journey through the one activity that I had loved since childhood and that came naturally to me, dance. Dancing to Bollywood, Hip Hop, and 80’s and 90’s pop is what kept me alive. Since this journey, I have never looked back."
