Sumera Garcia-Quadri

"My decision to enter the field of dance and wellness came out of my personal struggles with weight and body issues which can be traced back to my childhood. I was raised in a single-parent household by my late father who had Diabetes and a physical disability. Organized physical activities outside of the home weren’t always encouraged. Funds were also limited. In my teens, I decided to get serious about exercising but gyms and traditional exercise equipment worked for short periods of time and then I’d get bored and give up. I wasn’t sure how I was going to stay healthy if I could not find a long-term physical activity solution. I felt hopeless. I lacked the confidence to join and express myself physically in a group class. It wasn’t until working for health and sports-focused charities, however, that I realized the health benefits associated with regular weekly exercise. I decided to get serious and created a wellness plan that worked for me. Putting what I had learned into practice, I embarked on a journey through the one activity that I had loved since childhood and that came naturally to me, dance. Dancing to Bollywood, Hip Hop, and 80’s and 90’s pop is what kept me alive at home. Since this journey, I have never looked back."
